More interesting news from Baracoa!
In the photo is my friend, Roberto Orduñez, with artist/sculptor Bernardo Milhet who lives in Baracoa in the Cabacú neighborhood. Both men are standing in front of the Baracoa Museum of Archeology which Roberto arduously developed with the city to open as a celebration of the Taíno culture and history so intrinsic to Baracoa. Bernardo's rendition of a Taíno cacique at the entrance to said museum in a cave on a hill at one end of the city is an example of Bernardo's mastery of his art. Bernardo works in clay, stone, ebony, and guavacán (a tree indigenous to this eastern region of Cuba). Bernardo's art has been exhibited in city and province (state) events promoted by the ACCA and the Hermanos Azin Assoc. Bernardo also has a joint exhibit with fellow sculptor Yoeldis Fuentes at the Archeological Society Cacique Hatuey of Baracoa, where both have sculptures related to Taíno art and heritage.
Bernardo Milhet conocido (como el niño) actualmente vive en el barrio de Cabacú en la ciudad de Baracoa y no solo trabaja la piedra, sino también trabaja la madera como el ébano, el guayacán y el granadillo. Algunas de sus obras han sido expuestas en eventos municipales y provinciales promocionados por la ACAA y la asociación Hermanos Zain. Actualmente, junto al joven escultor Yoeldis Fuentes, sus nuevas obras escultóricas dan la ambientación a las Salas de Arqueología de la Sociedad Arqueológica Cacique Hatuey de Baracoa, donde además se exponen algunas de sus obras relacionadas con el arte Taíno.
